What to Expect

Nestled in the lush foothills of the Mullayanagiri Range, Chikmagalur is a serene hill station in Karnataka that perfectly blends aromatic coffee plantations, ancient temples, and misty mountain trails. Whether you’re exploring Hoysala-era stone carvings, trekking up Mullayanagiri — the highest peak in Karnataka — or sipping a fresh brew amid rolling estates, Chikmagalur offers the perfect mix of calm and adventure. Expect winding ghats, scenic drives, warm local hospitality, and that unmistakable fragrance of freshly roasted coffee in the air.

Day 1 – Arrival via Mangalore & Temple Stop in Sringeri

  • Begin the drive from Mangalore to Chikmagalur (≈ 210 km) — a scenic route through the Western Ghats.
  • En route, stop at Sringeri, a sacred temple town founded by Adi Shankara (8th century).
  • Visit the Sri Vidyashankara Temple (1342 AD) — an exquisite blend of Dravidian and Hoysala architecture.
  • If time allows, enjoy the free temple lunch (prasadam) — simple, clean, and wonderfully organized.
  • Continue your drive through lush forests and hairpin-bend ghats, watching for lion-tailed macaques along the way.
  • Check in to The Serai Chikmagalur, a luxury resort with private villas and pools, surrounded by coffee plantations.
  • Take part in the evening plantation walk — learn how coffee is cultivated and roasted.
  • Celebrate New Year’s Eve (as we did) or enjoy a quiet night under the stars at the resort.

Day 2 – Temples, Tigers & Timeless Architecture

  • Start your day with breakfast at The Serai (try local filter coffee before heading out).
  • Visit the Belavadi Temple first — smaller and less crowded, home to one of the most beautiful Krishna idols in South India (note: photography not allowed inside).
  • Continue to the Halebidu Temple, a grand showcase of Hoysala craftsmanship, adorned with intricate stone carvings.
  • In the afternoon, embark on a drive to the Bhadra Tiger Reserve — a vast sanctuary known for elephants, leopards, and (rarely spotted) tigers.
    • Entry is only through government-organized safaris — no advance booking or private tours.
    • Even if you don’t spot wildlife, the dense teak forests and serene lakes make it worthwhile.
  • Return to The Serai by evening for dinner at the resort restaurant — though the food is pretty mediocre, the service is warm and attentive.

Day 3 – Birdsong & the Road to Bangalore

  • Rise early (~6AM) for birdwatching around the resort — guided walks are available at dawn.
  • After breakfast, check out and begin your drive back toward Bangalore.
  • Stop at the Belur Temple, another gem of Hoysala art, famous for its intricate sculptures and friezes.
  • For lunch, make a detour to Murali Miltry Hotel, known for authentic South Indian non-vegetarian fare — hearty, flavorful, and unpretentious.
  • Continue onward to Bangalore Airport (BLR) for your flight home or next destination.
