SINGAPORE

Basic Info

Although small, Singapore is a bustling city full of activities, sights and food to keep a tourist satisfied for weeks! The Singapore airport is enormous and has been named the best airport in the world for the past several years. There are plenty of airlines that fly into Changi International airport, so getting to the city shouldn’t be a problem at all. The airport has many shopping areas and restaurants, so if you’re stuck in Singapore for a long layover, you’ll definitely find something to do! They recently built a new addition to Terminal 1: a polar vortex waterfall surrounded by greenery, making it almost look like a jungle.

One thing to know is that if you are in Singapore for a layover making an international connection, you must pass immigration to see the attraction. The immigration officers only allow you to go through if you have at least 5 hours of a layover. Traveling through terminals is fairly easy, they have inter-terminal trams. The tram from terminal 2 to 3 goes through the waterfall, so if you’re unable to see it for yourself, this is also an option.

Where to Stay

There are plenty of beautiful hotels in Singapore. The first time I traveled to the city, I stayed in a quaint boutique hotel located close to the Marina Bay Sands. This time, I booked an Airbnb located on Orchard Street which is the center of food and shopping in Singapore. There are many apartments available everywhere, so finding a place to stay is very simple.

Things to Do

There are a few museums in the city that are very interesting and worth a visit: the Art and Science Museum and the Park View museum. Chinatown is also very beautiful and filled with great restaurants. Singapore is also known for shopping, so that is always a must when coming.

Some unique Singaporean brands that I was able to find were:
Mythology
Atelier Ong Shunmugam
Dust Bunny Vintage
The fashion pulpi
Sabrina Goh

I also was able to note down some of the most popular and famous stores located on Orchard road:

Manifesto
Surrender (shoe store)
Actually
In Good Company
Beyond the Vines
Soceitya
Pedder on scott’s (shoe store)
The Denim Store (men’s clothes)

Where to Eat

Singapore is full of restaurants with a huge variety of cuisines. There are certain areas in the city where you can get more specific types of food. For example, one popular part of Singapore known as Little India, is full of street side shops selling traditional Indian delicacies. One very famous dish that is commonly ate is prata and chicken curry. A restaurant that I found most popular is: Mr. and Mrs. Mohgan’s Super Crispy Roti Prata. Street food in Singapore, in general, is a great option if you’re looking to gain new experiences. Some markets that I found with great street food are the following:

- East Coast Lagoon Food Village

- Lau Pa Sat Festival Market

- Bedok South Market & Food Center

- The xiao di fried prawn noodle at Serangoon North Avenue

- Foong Kee Roasted noodle at 6 keong saik road

Some other unique, popular restaurants that I found were: Candlenut, Tanuki Raw, Esquina, Park Bench Deli, Two Men Bagel House

Singapore is also home to several Michelin star restaurants. On our recent visit we had the fortune to try Jaan by Kirk Westaway, a 1 star Michelin restaurant. Although this restaurant has only 1 star my take is that it is well worth more than a 1 star. It is one of the few Michelin restaurants to actually have a dedicated vegetarian menu. Not only is the food outstanding, the views from this restaurant are to die for (a bonus & worth paying for).
