A Day Trip to Ouarzazate & Ait Ben Haddou

Basic Info

Morocco is a land of contrasts, where bustling cities give way to serene deserts and ancient history intertwines with vibrant culture. One of the most captivating excursions you can embark on is a day trip to Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou, two gems that offer a glimpse into the heart of Morocco’s cinematic landscapes and rich heritage.

You can do this day trip from Marrakech although it can be pretty tiring. We did it in a day. If you have time I would recommend staying either at Ouarzazate or in one of the kasbahs of Ait Ben Haddou although I can’t recommend any in good faith since I didn’t stay in any of them.

The closest hotel to get on the road to Ouarzazate from Marrakech is the Amanjena or the Mandarin Oriental. I only recommend those because they do have an excellent reputation and they are outside of the city with easy access to get on the road to Ouarzazate.

Explore Atlas studios

Known as the “Hollywood of Morocco,” Atlas Studios is one of the largest film studios in the world. It has served as the backdrop for countless films and TV shows, including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. A guided tour gives you a behind-the-scenes look at movie magic in the making. Probably extremely touristy but I actually loved this tour. I would highly recommend it as you get a glimpse of how sets play such a big role in movies.

Kasbah Taourirt: A stunning example of Moroccan architecture, this kasbah is mostly closed but you can wander around some of the homes on the outside of the kasbah.

Ait Ben Haddou: A UNESCO World Heritage Treasure

From Ouarzazate, we continued our journey to Ait Ben Haddou, a mere 30 kilometers away. This ancient ksar (fortified village) is a sight to behold, with its earthen clay architecture blending seamlessly into the landscape. Ait Ben Haddou has stood the test of time, serving as a trading post and a defensive stronghold for centuries.

Exploring Ait Ben Haddou:

  • The Ksar: Walking through the narrow alleys of this UNESCO World Heritage site feels like stepping into a time capsule. The ksar is a maze of tightly packed houses, granaries, and communal areas, all built from traditional materials. Climbing to the top of the village rewards you with panoramic views of the surrounding desert.

  • Film History: Ait Ben Haddou’s unique appearance has made it a favorite filming location. It has appeared in many famous movies and TV series, such as The Mummy, Gladiator, and Game of Thrones. As you explore, you might recognize scenes from your favorite films.

The setting sun cast such a beautiful glow over this desert landscape - it is not just a destination but windows into a world where time seems to stand still.
