Oveido

Basic Info

Planning a vacation in northern Spain? It earns its nickname of the “Natural Paradise” with good reason. Not too far from popular destinations like San Sebastian, the region of Asturias offers a taste of “Green Spain”.

You could drive here from Madrid or take a local flight to Asturias airport to get to Oviedo.

Where to stay: We stayed at this beautiful airbnb La casa de Valdemora - its perfect for a large family and located in a quiet part of the region with stunning views of the mountain. It is only about 15 mins by car to the city of Oviedo.

How much time: One day is enough to catch all the sights in Oviedo but you can make this a base to take day trips to the surrounding areas although with the weather we had (it was raining non stop) we only visited Burgos.

Best time to visit: Summer obviously is the best time of the year but it also gets crowded although not as crowded as the rest of Spain

Things to Do

Oviedo has earned the reputation of being the cleanest city in Spain. It is filled with beautiful architecture and whimsical statues.

Founded in the 8th Century, Oviedo is also quite ancient. The old town is delightful and makes you want to stroll around taking in the colorful facades especially around the San Salvador Cathedral. Of special note is the pre-Romanesque UNESCO world heritage sites of San Miguel de Lillo chapel and Santa Maria del Naranco. They are built into the countryside and to get here from the city centre it is a good 30-40 minutes uphill climb. Alternatively you could drive here.

In Oviedo make sure you try the apple cider which is quite famous here.
