CROATIA

Basic Info

Beautiful coastlines, stunning lake, a fascinating history and delicious sea food.  Croatia has it all.

The main language here is Croatian but some amount of English is understood and in most of the tourist places, English is widely spoken.
Major currency is the Croatioan Kuna.  It is believed that they will move to the Euro in January 2023.

The major cities are Dubrovnik, Split & Zagreb.  Depending on where you are coming from you can fly into any of these major cities.

DAY 1: Arrive in Dubrovnik

Arriving into Dubrovnik airport and getting through customs is a breeze.  As soon as you step outside the arrivals halls you can either get an Uber to take you to the hotel or there are coaches that will drive you to the old town.   An Uber from the airport to the old town will cost around 42USD.  The arrival hall in the airport also has a lot of ATM's that you can withdraw money from so it makes it easier for you to take the coach which I'm sure is a lot cheaper.

Stay at the The Pucic Palace. Set in the heart of Dubrovnik this beautiful hotel has fantastic service and a fabulous breakfast with lovely views over the town.

One other hotel that looked fabulous but is located just outside the old town is The Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik.
If you plan to stay within the old city call the hotel ahead of your arrival so that they can send someone to meet you. Google maps do not work very well within the old city and it is hard to find the hotel without help.

DAY 2: Explore Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik has a lot to offer in terms of sights especially because the Game of Thrones was shot here.

Spend a day exploring Dubrovnik's Old Town. A stroll through the pedestrian maze of limestone alleys is like stepping back in time. The medieval city is home to plenty of sights, including Loggia Square, Onofrio Fountain, Rector's Palace, Dubrovnik Cathedral, Jesuit Stairs, Pile Gate & Ploče Gate and the Stradun (main boulevard).

Walk along the medieval walls of the Old Town for panoramic views of the city.  Take a walking tour of the Games of Thrones sights.  Take the cable car to the top if you want to see sweeping views of the city.

Eat at the Fish Restaurant in Old Town which is Michelin recommended. In addition there are other Michelin restaurants that you need to book ahead of time.

DAY 3: Drive to Split

The second-largest city in Croatia after Zagreb and the largest city in the Dalmatia region, Split is a gem of a place. The city has an intriguing history dating back to the Roman empire and the beauty of the Adriatic coast. And it is close to the stunning town of Trogir.
You need to rent a car to drive from Dubrovnik to Split. The drive itself takes 4-5 hours with jaw dropping views along the way.

En route stop at Ston to eat mussles and hike up the wall that is is second in size only to the Great Wall of China. Another side trip to take would be to Mostar but we didn't have the time to go there.
Stay at the Time hotel. The hotel is a 15 mins walk to the old city and the Riva. Rooms are modern and the breakfast is excellent. Onsite parking is available and free.

DAY 4: Visit Trogir and explore Split

Trogir in Croatia is one of the most charming and oldest towns on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast. It’s full of history and its surrounding landscape is beautiful.  It can be done as a day trip or half day trip from Split.

  • Visit the Cathedral of St. Lawrence

  • Climb the Cathedra's bell tower for panoramic views of the city

  • Admire the windows of the Cipiko Palace

  • Walk around Torgir's Central Square

  • Get lost in the streets of Trogir

  • Eat at TRS Konoba (Michelin recommended)

Then after lunch go on to the old town of Split to spend some time there.
Here are some of the things to do in Split:

  • Visit Diocletian's Palace

  • Climb up the tower of Staing Domnius Cathedral to get fabulous views over the city

  • Wander the streets of old town

  • Eat at Mazzgoon

DAY 5: Drive back to Dubrovnik and stay at Cavtat
