Day trip to Canterbury

Canterbury, a charming city steeped in history, offers a perfect escape for a day trip from London. The city of Kent is well known for the Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer and the famous Canterbury Cathedral.

What to see in Canterbury

Canterbury Cathedral: One of the most important churches in England. Founded in 597 this cathedral is a major pilgrimage destination and one of UK’s most visited site. The ticket is C17 rather steep for a cathedral but it is well worth it. Marvel at the architecture of this UNESCO site, admire the stunning stained glass windows and stroll through the gardens outside.

St. Augustine’s Abby: Next head to St. Augustine’s Abby. The ruins along with the Cathedral and St. Martin’s church make the world heritage sight. We did not go inside the ruins since most of the ruins are visible from outside.

Finally visit St. Martin’s church – the oldest church in England that has been used continuously as a church. It is very small and you can see the Canterbury Cathedral from here. In the churchyard are buried many prominent citizens.

After seeing all the main spots we walked around the busy streets, admired some of the architecture and then headed home in the evening.

How to get to Canterbury from London

Its easy to get to Canterbury from London by train. It takes just about 1 1/2 hours to get to Canterbury East or West. Both these stations are within easy walking distance to the city center and cathedral. We got off at Canterbury West. Right next to the station is The Goods Shed a farmers market & food hall. The baked goods here are really good.
