Language: English is the official language here.

Currency: The Canadian dollar is the local currency. Most businesses accept credit cards and we didn’t need to have any Canadian currency.

Plugs: Canada uses Type A and Type B electrical plugs and sockets. These are the same types used in the United States, Mexico, and several other countries.

Safety: Calgary is generally a safe city for tourists. However, like any major city, it's wise to take standard precautions.

Peak Season: Banff National Park experiences two distinct peak seasons:

  • Summer (June to August): This is the most popular time to visit Banff, with warm temperatures and sunny days. The park is bustling with tourists, and accommodations and activities can be more expensive.

  • Winter (December to February): Banff is a popular winter destination, attracting visitors for skiing, snowboarding, and other winter activities. Accommodations and activities can be more expensive during this time, especially during the holiday season.

Getting Around: Here are some ways to get around Banff:

Where to stay in Banff

When visiting the National Park, there are a few areas that come to mind. THe town of Banff is a good option since there are a lot of hotels, restaurants and you can easily access the park and hiking trails. However, my recommendation would be to stay in the area around Lake Louise especially if you want to catch the sunrise here. Here are my recommendations:

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

Located on the edge of Lake Louise this is the most luxurious and best option especially if you want incredible views of the mountains and easy access to the lake. If you book well in advance it can be a decent option

Located about 30 mins away on foot this is another more reasonable option to the Fairmont Chateau making it easier to get to the Lake for sunrise.

What to do in Banff

Banff has some of the most beautiful lakes in the world. You can drive from Calgary all the way to Lake Jasper in a day stopping at some of the lakes on the way.

These are the lakes you must see:

Peyto Lake: Considered to be one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. In order to see the lake you must hike upto the lookout point.

Lake Moraine: Another pictoresque lake perfect for canoeing.

Lake Louise: one of the more popular options and almost impossible to find parking unless you get here at 4AM. Also perfect for canoeing.

Bow Lake: super easy to see. It is right by the highway and easily accessible.

Hike Johnston Canyon: this is a scenic hike through Banff. The trail will take around 2 hours to complete to see both the upper and lower falls. You can also hike up to the ink pots which is a further 6 mile hike return.
